Dancing on Ice judge John Barrowman reveals the movie he watches every year at Christmas

John Barrowman has shared a family tradition and the movie he watches every year at Christmastime.

During an interview with Digital Spy earlier this year when he spoke about his festive album A Fabulous Christmas and UK tour, the star was asked about his favourite Christmas film.

“My favourite Christmas movie would be – it’s not really a Christmas film but we watch it every year – it’s The Sound of Music,” he said.

“We watch it because we all, the family, like to sit around on the sofa, have a couple of drinks, and then we all get up when the songs are on and perform them.

“Everybody would go to the Home Alone movies and stuff like that. That’s not so much for me. It’s The Sound of Music.

“Or, if we’re being traditional, It’s a Wonderful Life, which is an old film and a tearjerker.”

Last month, Barrowman explained that he sees A Fabulous Christmas – which features a wide range of covers including ‘Santa Claus Is Coming to Town’ and ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ – as a way to reclaim Christmas.

“It goes back to when I was a kid,” he said. “We celebrate Christmas with family and friends, and we used to go to church and have the communal feeling of Christmas.

“As I grew up and as a gay man, I realised that we weren’t as welcome in some churches – not all churches, but certain places.

“I wanted to reclaim Christmas and put out an album that celebrated Christmas – the kind of traditional side of it, the fun side of it, and as it says on the album, the fabulous side of it – so that people can reclaim it and start their own kind of festivities and their own celebration when they listen to the album.”

Barrowman will be seen on Dancing on Ice in 2020, as he joins the judges’ panel for the coming series.

John Barrowman’s A Fabulous Christmas is out now on Decca Records.
