Instrumentation in Hip Hop music is an underappreciated trait these days.
Allow the 16-piece big band Hip Hop collective The Urban Renewal Project to do their efforts in equating some balance.
On “Red Eye,” the new multi-layered single premiered by HipHopDX, they take listeners on an audio trip that’s reminiscent a worldly sound.
And for good reason.

“‘Red Eye’ was inspired by our tour to Indonesia last year where we played at the amazing Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta,” bandleader R.W. Enoch tells HipHopDX. “We met some amazing people over there, and I studied with some local gamelan musicians and worked with them to record on authentic Balinese instruments for elements this track. (‘Gamelan’ is the local Bahasa word for the Indonesian traditional orchestra.)
“Rappers] Elmer Demond and Slim da Reazon weave those Southeast Asian experiences together with some our other touring adventures to paint a picture late nights on the road with URP in ‘Red Eye’,” he concluded.
“Red Eye” is scheduled to appear on the band’s upcoming Love Glory Duty Death EP, expected to be released later in 2019. In the meantime, stream the single up above and check out the entire group on Instagram @urpmusic.
