Former Mythbusters presenter Jessi Combs has been killed in what is being described as a “horrific accident”.
The 36-year-old professional racer was attempting to break her own land-speed record in a jet-powered car in the Alvord Desert in Oregon when a crash occurred that claimed Combs’ life.
Combs had previously set the women’s land-speed record of 398 miles-per-hour, with a top speed of 440 miles-per-hour, in that same Alvord Desert back in October of 2013.
Her tragic death was announced on Instagram by her teammate Terry Madden in a heart-wrenching tribute.
“So I don’t know how to say any of this but it all needs said,” he wrote. “I have never loved or been loved by anyone as much as this amazing woman [Jessi Combs]. She was truly my unicorn and I enjoyed every single minute that I had with her.
“She was the most amazing spirit that I have ever or will ever know. Unfortunately we lost her yesterday in a horrific accident, I was the first one there and trust me we did everything humanly possible to save her!!”
Mere days before the tragic accident, Combs had tweeted about the risks that come with anything as dangerous as attempting to break a land-speed record.
“It may seem a little crazy to walk directly into the line of fire… those who are willing, are those who achieve great things… People say I’m crazy. I say thank you,” she wrote.
Fans of the popular Mythbusters series on Science Channel in the US and Discovery Channel in the UK will remember Combs for temporarily stepping as a replacement for Kari Byron while she was on maternity leave.
Byron paid tribute to Combs on Twitter: “So sad to hear about Jessi. She was a badass. Always pushing limits. Sending smiles into the universe for her.”
Also remembering the late presenter was fellow Mythbusters star Adam Savage, who tweeted: “I’m so so sad, Jessi Combs has been killed in a crash. She was a brilliant & too-notch builder, engineer, driver, fabricator, and science communicator, & strove everyday to encourage others by her prodigious example. She was also a colleague, and we are lesser for her absence.
“My heart goes out to her family.”
Aside from Mythbusters, Combs also presented the motoring series Xtreme 4×4 for four years as well as appearing on All Girls Garage and Overhaulin’.
